Shepherd’s Bush

The White City Entertainment Complex housed the 1908 Olympics. It was built – on a 200 acre site covered with pavilions, cascades and gardens – by the same man who had created the very successful Olympia nearby.

These fourth games were also an enormous success. They were noted for the marathon, in which the winner was helped across the line and disqualified. This fellow evoked such sympathy that he was given a gold cup by Queen Alexandra.

From then on, the race retained the extra 385 yards over the historic 26 miles that the route from Windsor Castle to the stadium had demanded.

The site was used as a munitions site in the Great War and as a greyhound track from 1927. It was finally demolished in 1985.

"I just want to give you and your team a quick shout-out because, a few weeks on, my floor is still looking as good as new! My kids like to play games on the floor but this was a bit difficult after we took up our carpet and the floorboards were in a shoddy condition. I couldn't wax the floor myself because we have an open-plan house where our floors are several metres long. That's when I decided to contact you. Your team came into my home on the day which we had arranged and did the work for us hassle-free. I was a bit worried because I thought there would be a major disruption to our home life, which isn't easy when you have young children. However, as the work is now finished, my kids can't stop playing on the floor because it is bright and shiny, and even a 'Ribena incident' the other day with some blackcurrant juice was easily wiped up with no lasting consequences. The kids thought that was great (as did my wife) and everyone in the house loves the new floors! Thanks again."

"As I live near the University of West London, I decided to rent out my spare room to students in order to make a bit of extra income. However, the room was in a state of disrepair, especially as its wooden floors were shabby looking and badly discoloured. This was not acceptable to me because I wouldn't want to live in this room at all, so I was certain that my tenants wouldn't either! As I didn't have enough free time or the experience to do the work myself, I decided to seek outside help from Jake and his team. Providing a very reasonable quote, the work was finished on time and within budget as well. The gaps in between the floorboards were resolved too, making the whole room warmer and more comfortable. In all, I am very happy with the work that you did. Thanks!"

"Wow! This was my first reaction when I saw what my floor looked like after its colour had been changed by your friendly team. I'd always been embarrassed with my floors, especially as they were a mixture of both light and dark brown, so they looked really shabby. When I contacted you, I explained my concerns and said that I wanted an excellent-looking dining room floor that was all one colour! After the staining process was completed, I was told in full about when I could move my furniture back into my dining room, and how best to care for my new floor. This was very helpful, especially as I had to put a lot of furniture into storage whilst you stained my floorboards. Not only did your hard work benefit my floorboards, but you saved me money as well because I didn't have to pay for more storage than I had to."

Taking care of wood floors in the home and garden

Hello to all the home decorators, the DIY experts, and the houseproud owners of newly sanded and polished wood floors. Perhaps you’ve just had The Floor Sanding Experts team come in to repair your old wooden floors – or you may have gone the DIY route. Whatever the case, if you’ve invested in quality wood flooring that has been prepared and finished with the correct materials, there is likely to be little maintenance compared other floors. Nonetheless, there are still things you can do to keep your investment looking great, whether indoors or outdoors. So how do to you keep it looking that good through the daily wear and tear?

Basic cleaning to help protect your wooden flooring

Use a dust-mop to keep floors dust free, as even small amounts of dirt can leave scratches. When you vacuum your bamboo, parquet, or hardwood flooring, make sure to use the right attachment and soft bristles. Never use steam-mops on your wood flooring. Use rugs or mats in high-traffic areas like entrances, and put floor protectors under furniture legs.

Indoors: what type of floor do you have?

Indoor flooring like parquet might take less of a beating than outdoor decking, but over time marks and grime will build up. Use a product that is designed for your particular wood floor and finish. Harsh solvents will leave the wood looking dull in no time, as will over-cleaning, so only use moist cleaners when it’s absolutely necessary. You can get rid of the worst marks with the correct application of very fine steel wool and floor wax.

Look after your outdoor decking

When cleaning your outdoor decking, the London weather can be a problem, especially if the wood has been affected by rain, causing fungal growth. Wash with a specially formulated fungicidal wash to remove the fungus that causes outdoor wood to blacken. If sun and exposure has left your outdoor decking faded and dull, look for a wood reviver that will nourish your wood and help restore it to a pristine condition with natural oils. Of course, you can always call The Floor Sanding Co team for further advice – wherever your floor, or whatever type of wood it may be.
